Meet Josh, a personal banker from the Royal Bank of Scotland. Josh is taking part in our Team GB baton relay in honour of his mum, who passed away earlier this year.

Earlier this year, my mum passed away at the age of 63, because of her alcoholism. Anyone who has lost a parent knows what the feeling is, you feel numb and lost, the one constant in life has gone.

My mum devoted herself to being the best mum that she could be. She took us on the best holidays that she could afford, I have some great memories with her and of us as a family.

I know however, that I will also have memories of the low days. Alcoholism affected my relationship with her towards the end. As horrible as it sounds, it felt like a chore to phone her as I knew there would be a short window where she’d be sober.

My mum was supported by Arrows, a service provided by Quarriers. They support people with addictions as well as helping their families and friends.

Her passing has reinforced just how quick life can be.

Arrows made regular phone calls and home visits to mum, they got her in contact with AA and helped her go to sessions. They gave her a space where she could talk to someone and allow her to get the help she needed.

Her passing has reinforced just how quick life can be. Being able to take part in the Baton Relay is a massive opportunity for me to give something back to those who helped my mum and say thank you for what they did. I hope that in being able to give a little back to them, it’ll give them an opportunity to support others in the community I grew up in.

I’ve never done anything like this before so it’s a real challenge for me.

I’m also doing this as I know it’s something that my mum would be immensely proud of, and no doubt would have been telling everyone she met about it.

I’ve never done anything like this before so it’s a real challenge for me. Knowing that our Olympians dedicate so much time and effort to be the best that they can in their respective sports has really helped me get ready for this challenge.

I hope to channel a little bit of their determination into helping me get ready for and completing the cycle.
