Final Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk of the year is Edinburgh’s biggest ever

5,000 people took part in the Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk for charitable causes.

Scottish charities will receive more than £1 million thanks to 5,000 people who took part in the Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk in Edinburgh.

This brings the total raised via the Kiltwalk in 2018 to £4.5 million, by over 20,000 walkers who took part in the four events. More than 1,150 Scottish charities will benefit from the funds raised.

Sir Tom Hunter and The Hunter Foundation will add 40% to everything raised by the walkers. For every £1 raised, £1.40 will go to a charity of their choice.

Sir Tom Hunter, founder of The Hunter Foundation and supporter of the Kiltwalk, said: “This is the most efficient fundraising platform out there. Before this event, I challenged the people of Edinburgh to put on their tartan and make a real difference to people’s lives. I’m pleased to say they did just that.

“The Kiltwalk gets bigger every single year without losing the incredible spirit that makes the event so special.

“I meet so many inspiring people at each event and I would like to thank every single one of them for their incredible efforts this year. The Kiltwalk team are already hard at work, planning for next year. I truly believe this can be Scotland’s biggest mass participation event.”

Leading the way

Leading out all three walks was 17-year-old Joanna Lamb, who lives with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer that only affects around 20 people each year in Scotland.

Royal Bank of Scotland CEO Ross McEwan joined Joanna at the starting line in Edinburgh alongside Malcolm Buchanan, Chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Scottish board, who led a team of almost 1,000 Royal Bank of Scotland colleagues who also took part.

Other names leading the way included tennis coach, Judy Murray, who took on the ‘Wee Wander’ for her own charity, The Judy Murray Foundation and the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Frank Ross, who took on the ‘Mighty Stride’.

All Kiltwalkers were supported with food, water and entertainment en-route at ‘Pit Stops’ run by charity partners including Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, Team Jak, Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) and It’s Good 2 Give.

Malcolm Buchanan, Chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Scottish board, said: “Thank you and well done to everyone who took part in the Edinburgh Kiltwalks.

“It's inspiring to see so many people coming together to support some great charities that help people in need in Scotland.

“Royal Bank of Scotland is a proud partner of the Kiltwalk and our CEO Ross McEwan joined colleagues, customers and friends to help raise money for the STV Children’s Appeal.

“This has been a fantastic event and thanks to all those who were fundraising, is an event that will help make a difference to so many lives across Scotland for years to come.”
