Royal Russell School is building a new purpose-built nursery and Junior School building following a significant funding arrangement with NatWest.

The new, bespoke junior school building, which has been funded by NatWest, will accommodate around 400 pupils and includes dedicated Early Years classrooms for younger pupils. It will also include spaces which can accommodate a variety of lessons, a dedicated outdoor play area and a special entrance for younger pupils to access the site. It will also house a bespoke science lab, art and design suites, and a new junior school library.

Royal Russell School educates 1,300 pupils aged three to 18 on its 110-acre campus in Croydon. Works on the independent school’s new junior school building began last year and the building is due to open to pupils in September 2026.

Headmaster Chris Hutchinson said: “We are incredibly excited about our new state of the art junior school building which will enhance the educational opportunities of our younger pupils. At Royal Russell School, we are proud to inspire a life of learning at the family school of choice and the new building will help us to continue doing just that.

“We have worked closely with the NatWest team on this project, and they understand what we want to achieve as a school. They are very solutions-oriented which helps us achieve our goals.”

Kevin Matthams, Relationship Director at NatWest, said: “The new junior school building at Royal Russell School will provide a fantastic space for pupils to learn and grow. We know that having the right educational environment, particularly during the early years, is essential for children’s development and we were delighted to support Royal Russell School as they move forward with their plans to enhance pupils’ education.”

Earlier this year NatWest announced it was expanding its lending target for the early years sector from £100m to £250m, as part of our role in The Royal Foundation Business Taskforce for Early Childhood.
