Engineering the next chapter for NCMT with £13.5 million of NatWest support

Backed by NatWest’s £13.5 million funding package, Coventry-based engineering specialist NCMT is accelerating growth, investing in innovation and strengthening its role in UK manufacturing.

A manufacturing business at the heart of the Midlands economy

Founded in 1964, NCMT has spent more than 60 years supporting manufacturers across the UK and Ireland with advanced machine tools, precision machining solutions and engineering expertise. The Coventry-based business is a key part of the Midlands' advanced manufacturing ecosystem, helping customers improve productivity, increase efficiency and reduce material waste.

Working with globally recognised brands including Okuma and Makino, NCMT supplies and supports high-technology machining solutions used across a range of manufacturing sectors.

A pivotal moment for the business

After completing a management buyout from its previous shareholders, NCMT's leadership team wanted to create the foundations for long-term growth. The transition provided an opportunity to invest in the future of the business while retaining the expertise, relationships and engineering heritage that have underpinned its success for decades.

To support these ambitions, NCMT agreed a new primary banking relationship with NatWest, securing facilities worth £13.5 million, including an £8.3 million revolving credit facility and a £4 million bond facility, alongside foreign exchange and operational banking support.

The package provides the flexibility to invest in new technologies, support larger and more complex contracts, and strengthen the business's position in both domestic and international markets.

Backing growth, innovation and skills

The funding has been structured around the realities of modern manufacturing, providing working capital and contract support while giving the management team room to pursue future opportunities.

Alongside investment in technology and innovation, NCMT plans to continue expanding its apprenticeship programme and develop the engineering talent needed to support future growth. The business sees skills development as critical, both for its own success and for addressing wider challenges facing the UK's manufacturing sector.

As the company grows, it expects to create additional jobs across Coventry and the surrounding area while helping manufacturers adopt more efficient machining processes.

“We now have the flexibility to invest in new technologies, continue our apprenticeship programmes and grow

A partnership built for the next phase

For NCMT, selecting a banking partner was about more than funding alone. The business wanted a bank that understood the demands of manufacturing, export cycles and the importance of long-term investment in people, technology and innovation.

Jonathan Smart, Managing Director at NCMT, said:

"With the ownership transition complete, we now have the flexibility to invest in new technologies, continue our apprenticeship programmes and grow our role in the regional and national manufacturing ecosystem.

“Advanced engineering is central to the UK's industrial growth strategy, and Coventry has been at the heart of that story for generations. This funding allows us to build on that heritage and push into our next phase."

Timothy Dooner, Finance Director at NCMT, added:

"We were looking for a banking partner that understood export cycles, bonding requirements and the need to invest in skills over the long term.

“The structure we've agreed gives us the working capital and contract support we need, without constraining our ambitions to grow and innovate."

Looking ahead

With a strengthened balance sheet, new leadership structure and ambitious growth plans, NCMT is well positioned for its next chapter. By investing in advanced manufacturing technologies, supporting engineering skills and helping customers improve productivity, the company is continuing a legacy that began more than 60 years ago while helping shape the future of UK manufacturing.
