- USD10m boost from NatWest brings total support for Gooch & Housego PLC to USD 70m
- Funding will enable expansion of materials, increased manufacturing capacity, and stronger support for defence projects
- Investment opens up new apprenticeship spots and pushes forward high-tech innovation
Gooch & Housego PLC, a leading photonics engineering firm based in Dowlish Ford, Ilminster, has clinched a USD 10 million boost from NatWest, taking the bank’s total backing to USD 70 million.
This fresh injection of funding will help Gooch & Housego stock up on crucial materials like Germanium, keep their supply chain strong, and ramp up growth to meet rising demand in sectors such as aerospace, defence, semiconductor and life sciences. The deal is a win for the local community, bringing more skilled jobs and apprenticeships to the South West, and cements the UK’s position as a hub for cutting-edge technology.
Founded in 1948, Gooch & Housego PLC employs nearly 1,000 people in the UK and US, and is renowned for designing and manufacturing optical systems and advanced photonic components that work everywhere from the bottom of the ocean to deep space. Their unique approach includes growing high-purity crystals in-house and polishing glass to near-atomic smoothness, making their products trusted for mission-critical environments.
The fresh funding will allow Gooch & Housego to invest in expanding their manufacturing facilities, bring more of their optical lens production in-house, and streamline operations. It also means more specialist apprenticeship opportunities for local people, offering hands-on experience with rare materials and cutting-edge photonics technology – right here in the South West.
Charlie Peppiatt, Chief Executive Officer at Gooch & Housego PLC, said:
“This investment from NatWest is a key enabler for our continued growth and innovation.”
“By increasing our inventory and expanding capacity, we are able to strengthen our supply chain, support growing demand from our customers in mission-critical sectors, and provide more opportunities for apprenticeships and skilled jobs in the local community.”
Stuart Allison, Relationship Director at NatWest, commented:
“Gooch & Housego PLC is recognised for its leadership in photonics engineering, and we’re pleased to support their ambitions with this increased funding commitment.”
“The company’s focus on supply chain resilience, advanced manufacturing and apprenticeships aligns with NatWest’s mission to champion potential and build financial confidence for businesses and communities across the UK.”
